    • ISA Arborist Certification
    • One certification that is a big indicator of the company’s quality is ISA Arborist Certification. These companies have arborists on staff that have either studied arboriculture for two years or have had at least three years of experience working in the tree industry. They have passed a screening process and challenged an extensive, arborist exam testing their knowledge of the many different topics within arboriculture. Many companies say that they are certified, but simply mean they have a business license with the city of Edmonton. To be sure they are qualified arborists, ask to see their ISA number as proof.
    • Insurance and WCB Coverage
    • If the company does not have insurance and a tree falls on your neighbour’s house, you are considered liable! If a company does not have WCB and one of the workers is injured on your property, you can be considered liable as well! If a company refuses to provide you with proof of these documents, (for your safety) send them home!
    • Safety Gear Inspections
    • If the company intends to climb your tree using a ladder, send them away! Ladders and chainsaws are an incredibly dangerous combination.

     – If they are not using a bucket truck, the only other suitable form of accessing the tree is with climbing ropes. If they are not wearing hard hats and chainsaw pants, send them away too. It is a sad fact that many arborist deaths every summer in North America could have been prevented. Informed homeowners can help reduce those numbers significantly.
  • Price
  • When considering what company to hire, consider who you think will do the safest job, because in the end, that company will be the most affordable. Many unqualified companies bid low on tree work and are forced to rush the jobs in order to still make a profit. For example, a company that is rushing a job is unlikely to wait for the wind to calm down before felling a tree! Before they realize their mistake, the tree falls sideways and destroys the backyard shed. So, in an effort to save a few hundred dollars, the homeowners have to wait for a new shed to be built and everything in it. Imagine if that tree hit the house instead! This is not an uncommon narrative that takes place every year in Edmonton.
