Tree cabling is the mechanical fastening of a tree’s canopy to prevent it from splitting further. We use very strong, German, synthetic cables rated up to 2- tons. Once installed, they are designed to be able to adjust as the tree grows. This prevents girdling which can suffocate the tree. We can also install shock absorbers if no crack is present. It is recommended that Tree Ninja is brought to inspect the cabling system annually.
Co-dominant conifers are also fantastic candidates for tree cabling. A co-dominant stem is when there is more than a single stem branch from a conifer’s crown. It is recognized by its tuning fork shape (U). It is easily identifiable by our ISA certified arborists. The union between the multiple stems is notoriously weak. The reason being they are no strong wood fibers holding the crown together, instead only bark and sap! If a tree cable is installed it will likely save the stems from splitting during a storm.
Once hired to install a tree cabling system our arborists will first assess the condition of the tree. If the tree is compromised, our bucket truck or aerial lift may be required. Once a safe method of accessing the tree’s canopy has been found, we attach our tree cables to the strongest stems and cinch them together. Sometimes a triangle pattern will be used to depending on the positioning of the dominant stems. We always install special fabric which reduces the friction and wear on the bark of the tree. A pulley system may also be used to bring the stems together prior to tightening the cable. The great advantage of our cabling system is that no drilling into the tree is necessary. We are also able to adjust the tree the cables as the tree grows in a taper. After the cabling system is installed, our arborists will show their work to the homeowner if present.

Common Tree Cabling Questions:
Are the tree cables an eye-sore?
Nope. Our cables are black and blend in with the shadows of the canopy. To be honest, we often have to point out the cabling system to the customer otherwise they would not have been able to see it!
Can I cable a tree myself?
We do not recommend it. The use of ratchet straps or chains is known to damage the cambium of a tree. Proper tree cabling kits have to be specially ordered and professionally installed.
How much does it cost to cable a tree?
Cost is very dependent on the size of a tree and the number of cables that need to be installed. Tree Ninja offers free quotes in addition to determining if a customer’s tree is a good candidate for tree cabling.
How often do the cables need to be adjusted?
We recommend annually. A cable system has a life span of 7 years. However, trees are living, changing organisms and the cables should be continually inspected to ensure they are helping the tree.
